Most people live on Cape Cod because it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth. I’m no exception. I moved here because I love all that Cape Cod has to offer including the beaches, marshes, cranberry bogs, lighthouses, and the quintessentially picturesque New England seacoast towns. There is no better way to see it, in my estimation than by foot if you are a runner. From running barefoot along the National Seashore to jogging on the Cape Cod Rail Trail that spans from South Dennis to Wellfleet, nature and beauty abounds. Whether you are a walker, jogger or racer, the Cape offers some of the region’s most beautiful vistas.
For the more competitive spirit, Cape Cod has become well known as a destination race location for visitors the world over. We currently boast not only the Falmouth Road Race in August but also the Cape Cod Marathon in October each year. Additionally, for the heartiest & most diehard among us, the Hyannis Marathon & ½ Marathon are held each February in Hyannis and mark the beginning of the marathon season here in New England. Memorial weekend offers the Johnny Kelley ½ Marathon which is held in Hyannis and is named after the famed Boston Marathoner who spent his life here on Cape Cod. For recreational and truly speedy short-distance runners alike, the Cape Cod race calendar is chock full of weekend races ranging in distance from 5K & up throughout most of the year.
The Cape Cod Athletic Club is a great resource for the most up-to-date race calendar as well as a listing of weekly group runs that are open to the public and triathlon training. Check it out at www.capecodathleticclub.org. The Cape Cod Times also offers a listing of weekend races at www.capecodonline.com.
